A QUICK HISTORY LESSON
March 2021, one person simply wanted to have some fun with their friends. The idea was to create a small page on SoundCloud. As the seasons changed, they’d all upload one song to the page. This would be used as a measurement of artistic growth and to see how each friend slowly figured out where they wanted their projects to go.
The page went through many names, most of which not even the original members can recall.
Then, in a Discord call one spring afternoon, one friend said…
“I don’t know why, but silkenwood sounds like a cool name.”
That very moment changed everything.
The art was all set, the logos had been designed and redesigned several times over, then suddenly, the friend that started it all had another idea. What if measuring growth wasn’t all that they did? What if they had other projects they worked on, getting more friends from outside their immediate circle involved?
In order to do this, they chose to go from just a cute SoundCloud page to a collective.
They planned another project, then another, soon they had the idea of showcasing individual artists and singles.
They pondered what they’d showcase, before quickly coming to the conclusion: the music they held to the highest regards and standards was that which pushed boundaries. The music that blurred lines between genres and presented sounds unheard of before. Music that ultimately boiled down to one phrase.
“FORWARD THINKING, REGARDLESS OF GENRE.”
It dawned on them, suddenly, that simply a collective wasn’t enough for the scale of the project they wanted to undertake. They needed to take it more seriously, they knew they were onto something big.
That is the day SILKENWOOD became a label.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
After a long 14 month hiatus, it dawned upon us that trying to turn a community meant for charity into a full scale record label has some fundamental flaws. So after these excruciating months we returned with a new direction of solely charity events. In an effort to keep the record label medium, we founded a record label called SoapBox; Maintaining the core values and direction that SILKENWOOD had when it acted as a label.
Rallying behind us is an incredible community of artists who believe in what we do, but more importantly that believe in each other.
From our standard releases, to our events held in our Discord server that benefit various charities, we ensure everything is thought out and planned to the tiniest details. Our service is to our artists and our community, not to ourselves.
We love music, we love art, we love artists, and it’s our job to ensure that other people discover truly incredible projects they can fall in love with as well.
